The Department of Genetics at the UPV/EHU is looking for a student to fill a double degree PhD position (between UPV/EHU and the University of Copenhagen, UCPH) in the field of applied hologenomics within the H2020 project HoloFood. The project will be developed under the supervision of Prof. Andone Estonba (UPV/EHU) and Assist. Prof. Antton Alberdi (UCPH).
HoloFood is a European project that aims to optimise animal food production systems by understanding the complex molecular interactions between feeds, animals and intestinal microorganisms through the implementation of a state-of-the-art hologenomic framework. A holistic framework integrating genomics, metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, metabolomics, intestinal histopathology and immunology will be applied to samples obtained from experiments conducted in commercial-like environments. Specifically, the framework will be implemented in two of the most important protein sources in the world, namely chicken and salmon farming.
The project is coordinated by UCPH, and the consortium is comprised of four universities, three companies and three research centers from 6 European countries. The project will be running between 2019 and 2022.
The PhD student will be involved in the poultry system, although will have the opportunity to interact with researchers working on the salmon system. The PhD student will be enrolled in two PhD programs (UPV/EHU and UCPH), hence being compulsory to fulfill all requirements (including course attendance and other training initiatives) of both programs. The PhD student will spend approximately 1.5-2 years in Bilbao and 1-1.5 years in Copenhagen. Travel expenses will be fully covered by the project while the accommodation expenses in Copenhagen will be partially covered.
The position starts on 1st January 2019 or as close as possible to that date.
